Lovesong for Home

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away… And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 3:8,13)

you plant the only flowers

in all of Chinatown

by your stoop

struggling pieces of green

growing in the wake

of the Silver Line bus

you talk about social responsibility

watch over the orphans and widows

while you fight

against gay marriage

like men who love men

and women like me

don’t deserve to live

like heterosexuals do

at sixteen I enter the church

aware I’ve cut

women out of my dating pool

but this petition

for the protection of family values

by outlawing marriage

paper cuts my heart

to pieces

all moral issues aside

did you think we’ll find God

in the legislature ?

that we’ll say

if we can’t get married

let’s go to church

and find out why

do you think that’s how God

planned us to be loved?

with picket signs and

protests in the place of trust?

you cut me down

into tiny

pitiful tears

tattoo yourself

onto my heart valves

and the ink blends in

with my blood

you introduced me

to God

when I was sixteen and alone

cutting myself and crying

to no one

told me the prophets were poets

David penned psalms

keep writing

now these three remain

and Love

these three abide

when all else is gone

but the greatest of these

is Love

I pray out my hopes for you

because God is Love

and only Love

can save us now
