Chinese Americans fought in the American Civil War! It makes perfect sense if you think about it. By the mid 19th century, Chinese were coming to the US on merchant ships, through missionaries, and as laborers. As people living in the US when the war broke out, they got involved.

Logical or not, Asian Americans are often overlooked in US history, and it’s nice to see them get some attention. Check out the article and audio interview with Ruth Lum McCunn. It’s funny to think that in a war (and a country) in which race mattered so much, Chinese Americans still occupied a place of racial ambiguity.
