I had the privilege of hearing Chuck D, co-founder of Public Enemy speak at UMass Boston this week. He was there as a motivational speaker, not a rapper, but it was pretty cool. His main point in a rather meandering rant, was that ignorance and acting like a dumbass is what gets media attention and fame, but that doesn’t mean you should do it. You’ve got to know yourself so that no one can sell you a false image of yourself.
So, of course, I went back to some old Public Enemy music for this week. If only all music advocated for self-awareness, self-determination, and social action for positive change and true freedom.
