Here’s hoping we all have a reflective, revolutionary Black History Month.
And here’s to remembering that Black history is just US history by another name. Every time we celebrate the achievements of African Americans in the face of oppression and violence, we have to acknowledge that the rest of America was involved in creating black history. February doesn’t exist in a vacuum, separated from a more palatable American history.
And here’s to remembering that Black history is part of a continuing timeline. The pain that we lament and the struggle that we celebrate didn’t end because we wrote it down and gave it a month. It’s part of the present that we continually live through.
