Me and my friends from UMass Boston got the chance to perform at BAASIC 2010 this past Saturday. You can catch the videos here:
In watching performances, most people naturally value the performer’s charisma and flow. It’s natural, right? Performances mean the audience only gets to hear the piece once, and so they grab onto what can be grabbed– tone of voice, speed, play on words, main ideas. In performance pieces, it helps to repeat the main idea. It’s pretty different from reading poetry, where its the poet’s job is to give the reader something to think about. The reader has the ability to go back to a few lines and let layers of meaning bubble up to the surface.
It’s difficult to be a skilled writer and performer. That’s what I thought as I watched all of the spoken word/poetry acts at BAASIC this year.
